Liposuction is one of the most effective ways to remove pockets of excess fat that diet and exercise are unable to resolve. Since 2006, our Washington DC liposuction practice, has been providing the most advanced liposuction techniques using Smartlipo™, or laser-assisted liposuction, J-Plasma™, and power assisted liposuction to produce superior results. Our photo gallery is extensive to showcase our expertise.
At DC Cosmetics, we will assess you and discuss with you both laser-assisted liposuction and traditional liposuction at our practice. Our website offers a vast trove of information, so be sure to click on the related pages to explore fully.

Which type of liposuction is best for me?
The first question should be, “what artistic surgeon is right for me?” Liposculpture is akin to an artist using a delicate pain brush rather than a fairy waving a magical wand, and we believe we our expertise and artistic eye is top-notch.
For maximizing results, our goal is to match our patients with the best techniques after a comprehensive examination. On a given day, a quarter of the people we see may not be ideal candidates, so we will educate them, and for the patients that are good candidates, we find that a combination of laser liposuction and tumescent liposuction often produces the best result for smaller (one to two area cases), whereas for more extensive work, we will often use J-Plasma™ or VASER™. When under the care of Dr. Khalifeh, we will seek to match you with the best possible technique for your body and goals.

Types of Liposuction We Offer:
Most liposuction techniques are closely and intimately related, while offering some select small advantages depending on the case. The most important determinant of your results remain by a far margin, the surgeon holding the device. At DCcosmetics, we continuously study and acquire the latest advanced liposuction techniques and currently offer the following:
- Laser liposuction: Laser-assisted liposuction is among our most recommended procedures for targeted regions, as it offers extra skin tightening beyond traditional laser. At DC Cosmetics, we offer Smartlipo™ laser by Cynosure. Laser liposuction does not require general anesthesia and is among the most popular and effective body sculpting procedures available.
- VASER and High Definition Liposuction: High definition lipo can be used with any technology, including VASER ultrasound. High definition liposuction refers to the selective removal of fat to accentuate existing muscle contour and focuses to accentuate muscle contour. On occasion, high definition liposuction is combined with fat grafting into the muscles themselves to expand the volume, hence VASER is used for preservation of the fat when that is required. High definition lipo with fat graft into the muscle requires general anesthesia.
- Power-assisted liposuction: Power-assisted liposuction (MicroAire)is typically used during any of our cases at DC Cosmetics as an adjunct to energy-device technologies. These systems are appropriate for medium to higher fat volume extraction and aid in facilitating the removal of the fat by employing a gentle cannula tip motion that further helps extract the fat cells
- Tumescent liposuction: Tumescent liposuction involves injecting a solution of local anesthetic and epinephrine into the area before fat extraction. The solution swells the area, allowing for greater control in removing more substantial quantities of fat.
- J-Plasma and Renuvion: J-Plasma is a powerful energy device using helium as its energy source. In that, it is similar to Smartlipo, and there are advantages and disadvantages to each. J-Plasma is mostly used in the neck area, where it is currently FDA approved.

The fusion of advanced technology and education: Superior results in liposuction
When considering body sculpting, we help you separate hype from reality. We believe the fusion of advanced technology with education, experience, and artistry produces a far superior result.
Tumescent fluid , the first basic step in all liposuction techniques.
All modern liposuction procedures start with infusing tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is composed of saline, lidocaine for pain control, epinephrine for bleeding control, and bicarbonate to make the infusion less painful. The quantity of these substances will depend on the area being treated. If you hear of the “wet technique” or “super-wet technique.” These terms refer to the quantity of fluid injected. No matter what type of liposuction is to be used, you can expect some amount of tumescent fluid to be injected to start the process.
What are the different liposuction related technologies?
After the infusion of the tumescent fluid, a variety of the technologies may be applied, including laser (Smartlipo) or ultrasound (VASER), to break up and release the fat cells from the surrounding tissues. Skin tightening and fat breaking technologies vary and include laser-assisted (such as Smartlipo) or ultrasound (such as Vaser), or plasma based energy like J-plasma. Power-Assisted liposuction called MicroAire or a water-jet assisted system may be applied to loosen and break up the fat. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. Our customized technologically advanced liposuction treatment is cutting edge and can help you attain your beauty goals.

What is the Recovery From Liposuction?
The recovery period correlates with the numbers of areas treated as well as the volume of fat removed. Some areas heal faster than others. some of the faster healing areas are the “lovehandles” and the “outer thighs”, and the “chin/neck”. Some of the slower healing areas are the “inner thighs” and “abdomen”. In general, if you work from home, we recommend taking one day off. If you work in an office, you will need 2-3 days off. If your work is physical such as nursing, police work, military, construction, etc, you will need about 10 days off. After your liposuction, the areas treated will be protected with a compression garment. This garment holds your skin tightly against the reshaped area of your body, so it heals smoothly and protects against excessive swelling. You may have bruising and swelling, which diminishes over a few days. Any discomfort is managed with pain medication. The incisions through which the fat is extracted are small and you will have hidden scars. To return to light exercise takes about a week, and then gradually this can be increased. If you have a special occasion such as a trip or wedding, we recommend factoring in 4-6 weeks prior to your event. Please see our detailed recovery timeline by clicking on the liposuction recovery timeline page.

Dr. Khalifeh Demonstrates Arm Liposuction

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?
The purpose of the consultation is to assess your goals and the areas of treatment and give you the best advice to help you decide whether to proceed or not. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you should be:
- In good general health
- Within 30 percent of your ideal body weight
- Your skin retains a good level of elasticity
- You are not trying to use liposuction as a weight loss regimen, but a sculpting regimen
- You have fatty areas on your abdomen, love handles, fatty upper arms, beneath the chin, or on the thighs or buttocks
- You want a more sculpted figure
What is Smartlipo? What is J-Plasma? What is VASER? and of course, which is better
We realize that the field of body contouring has become very confusing for patients shopping for a minimally invasive body contouring solution. In addition to many devices, some national companies have also sprung up such as SONOBELLO™ and AIRSCULPT™, offering their own versions of minimally invasive body contouring.
As we educate our patients, the primary determinant of how happy you will be with your results will be the skill and artistic eye of your surgeon, rather than the technology used. That said, we do perform a lot of our cases using awake laser assisted liposuction, or Smartlipo™ . We also perform J-Plasma™ and VASER™ lipo, as well as straight tumescent lipo or power assisted lipo in some cases.
For smaller more targeted regions, we usually recommend Smartlipo™ to be performed under local anesthesia. With smartlipo, the laser energy is emitted through a thin laser fiber . The benefits of this approach are that the fat can be extracted with far less trauma, as the laser energy melts it away from the surrounding tissue. The recovery time is faster, and Smartlipo has the added benefit of tightening the tissue around the treated area, for a smoother, firmer look overall.
For larger treatment areas, we prefer power-assisted or VASER assisted liposuction performed under general anesthesia. This allows us to treat multiple areas at the same session. The recovery may be longer than SMARTLIPO, but the patient’s goals for multiple areas can be achieved with comfort and expediency.
What type of Anesthesia will I need?
The anesthesia choice still varies a lot between center to center, some favoring awake liposuction and more traditional offices favoring general anesthesia. We do offer both options, and we vary our recommendation based on the case.
For most cases, we prefer the AWAKE LIPO TECHNIQUES, which are done with minimal oral sedation and occasionally, PRONOX™ anesthesia. With these techniques we will numb the area well for your comfort.
For larger volume cases, or in cases where liposuction is being combined with another more invasive procedure such as a tummy tuck, we will perform the procedure under general anesthesia.
At the time of your consult, we will discuss all options such as General Anesthesia, IV sedation, or Awake techniques, and depending on the volume and number of areas being done, as well as your preference, we will tailor a plan that will get you your desired goals in a safe and effective fashion.
What Type of Liposuction is Right For Me?
We will evaluate your desired treatment area and tailor our recommendation to your body. We will also discuss with you your preference for anesthesia choices, which will determine what technique needs to be used as some techniques are done awake, while others are done under deeper anesthesia.

FAQ
- Why should I undergo liposuction from a board-certified plastic surgeon?
The experience, quality, and artistry of your provider are the critical points in the results of your procedure. When under the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with liposuction, you can expect superior results. Achieving board-certification requires many added years of education and practice beyond a medical degree. A “cosmetic surgeon” can be any certified medical doctor who performs cosmetic treatments and promotes these procedures.
- How much fat can be removed with liposuction?
A significant quantity of fat can be removed with liposuction. When deciding on the amount of fat to be removed, a full health evaluation is required. The general guidelines for fat removal involve a maximum limit of 11 pounds of fat to be removed, although BMI (body mass index) is being evaluated as being a more accurate way to make this decision, based on a recent study. Removing 11 pounds of fat from a patient weighing 130 and a patient weighing 190 pounds is far different, and the decision should be made by a qualified and experienced medical professional.
- Will I have scars after liposuction?
The incisions through which the fat extraction device is placed are tiny only about 3 to 6 mm in length. These incisions heal quickly into small and not very noticeable marks. In addition, we will place all incisions in aeras where they are not likely to be seen.
