Inverted nipples, although not medically dangerous, can be a constant source of embarrassment for both men and women. If you are one of the millions of people with this condition, Dr. Khalifeh offers a custom correction surgery to repair inverted nipples and restore your confidence.

What are inverted nipples?

When your nipple points inward, it is “inverted.” There are gradient levels of severity of inversion:

  • Grade I inverted nipples may pop out if exposed to the cold, during sexual arousal, or popped out manually
  • Grade II inverted nipples suffer from a more form of inversion, and they rarely pop out on their own and can be challenging to pull out manually
  • Grade III inverted nipples are severely inverted, and it can be very difficult to pop out if possible at all. Grade III inversion can make it impossible to breastfeed a baby.

How are inverted nipples repaired?

Inverted nipple correction is a surgical procedure to pull a nipple outward and restore a natural, healthy look. Inverted nipple correction is performed under local anesthesia and is a rapid procedure that can be completed in an hour or less.

The steps in the procedure are as follows:

  • A small 1.5-2 centimeter incision is made around the areola
  • The tissues that are pulling the nipple inward are released
  • A specialized pull-bolster is placed to hold the nipple outward during the healing period.

Before & After

Recovery after inverted nipple correction

Once the surgery is completed and the bolster is in place, you will return home to recover. Most patients return to work within one day, and full recovery usually takes five to seven days. The bolsters must remain in place during the healing process, covered with a loose shirt or sweater. Most patients report minimal pain, though the procedure may interfere with nipple sensation.

Causes of inverted nipples

Many factors can cause inverted nipples:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Breast cancer
  • Breastfeeding
  • Scarring or loss of fat from an injury
  • Gynecomastia
  • Various other diseases and illnesses

Am I a candidate?

If you’re suffering from inverted nipples that make you feel self-conscious, you are likely a good candidate for inverted nipple correction. Candidates are:

  • In good general health
  • Are free from any medical conditions that could negatively impact healing or increase the risks of surgery
  • Don’t smoke or consume an excess of alcohol
