Smartlipo

What type of
liposuction works best?

Smartlipo is the gold standard of laser liposuction. Traditional liposuction does not include lasers or ultrasound but is mechanical fat extraction. What occurs during
the Smartlipo procedure?

Numbing fluid is delivered to the treatment area through very small incisions. The laser energy works to liquefy fatty tissue, which is extracted with liposuction. To perform this procedure, Dr. Khalifeh makes a small incision in the skin and the laser energy emitted through a thin laser fiber is activated to liquify the fat. Dr. Khalifeh points the laser at the skin tissues, to foster natural collagen production. The laser energy on the skin tissue has the added benefit of tightening the skin after the fat extraction to create a sculpted, smooth body contour.

Preparing for Smartlipo

You will be provided with full instructions to follow before your procedure. The basics are as follows:

  • Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin and products that contain aspirin at least two weeks before your Smartlipo treatment as these medications affect blood clotting
  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages within 24 hours of your Smartlipo procedure or lab tests
  • Bring an extra set of loose-fitting clothing to wear following your Smartlipo procedure
  • Arrange for another person to transport you to and from our office

What does Smartlipo do?
Why is it so effective?

A calibrated laser liquefies the fat deposits located under the top layers of your skin. The laser ruptures fat cells, liquefying them. Dr. Khalifeh removes the liquid via liposuction using a small hollow tube (cannula) inserted through a tiny incision in your skin. The small cannula that Dr. Khalifeh uses during his Smartlipo procedure will not leave visible scars once healed.

What is the recovery
time after Smartlipo?

There are several stages in the recovery from a Smartlipo procedure. Dr. Khalifeh applies a compression garment after your procedure to prevent the tissues from shifting or an excess of blood coagulation. You will most likely experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort after your procedure. Whether you can return to work right away will reflect the number of areas trimmed and slimmed in your treatment.

Your body needs time to recalibrate its fluid following your Smartlipo procedure. It also needs time to heal because the tissues were disturbed and redistributed. The more significant the change in fluid volume, the larger the area affected by the Smartlipo procedure, and the longer the recovery will require. However, because Smartlipo is not as traumatic to your tissues, the recovery time is substantially less than what occurs with traditional liposuction. During your recovery from your Smartlipo procedure:

  • Get rest—you may need two to three days, or up to a week to recover
  • Avoid any strenuous activities – this includes lifting, for up to four weeks
  • Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy foods to speed your recovery, avoiding salty, processed foods

The laser utilized with Smartlipo seals the blood vessels while liquifying fat. This reduces bleeding, bruising and swelling. The Smartlipo procedure can be performed with local, general or regional anesthesia.

Keeping in mind that Smartlipo is not a weight loss procedure, the amount of weight you lose will reflect the quantity of fat removed. The current maximum amount advised is 11 pounds, but a more typical amount would be in the range of 6 pounds.
