Glandular Tissue

Glandular tissue is firm and dense, and when it overdevelops in men, it can result in an undesirable appearance which resembles female breasts. A gynecomastia procedure can address this issue and achieve excellent results that improve confidence and quality of life.

What is Glandular Tissue?

The human body is composed of cells. Cells grouped together to perform a function is called tissue. One of the functions that the body needs is the manufacturing of substance for excretion, and the tissues that are responsible for that manufacturing are called glandular. This can be the prostate gland, sweat gland, apocrine glands, and yes, even in males, breast glands. Of course, because of our common embryological development with females, we have tissues that are present in us, but the hormonal signals for development do not lead to overdevelopment.

What makes glandular
tissue overdevelop?

Your glandular tissue has always been there. What makes it overdevelop is an over-production of hormones or hormone-like substances, or an oversensitivity of the glandular tissue to those substances, especially during puberty. So hormones, especially during puberty, can stimulate the gland to grow and multiply. Fat produces an estrogen-like substance; therefore men whose mothers were obese during pregnancy may have more glandular tissue. Performance enhancing (illegal) steroids can also cause this condition, as well as marijuana. The list goes on.

What medication can
I take to reverse that growth?

Medications that block the actions of steroids, such as tamoxifen, may have the effect of reversing growth. These medications are not often prescribed because they are not approved for glandular tissue overgrowth. Also, the long-term side effects of medication may not be worth the cosmetic benefit. An endocrinologist would make that decision, but gynecomastia is rarely treated that way due to side effects. There are a lot of herbal medications that are not proven to do anything but enrich the company selling them.

Surgery for gynecomastia

The most popular way to get rid of glandular tissue is surgical.  Surgery will permanently remove glandular tissue in a one time and very safe procedure.  Most cases are performed under local anesthesia as the area is straight forward to numb.  Removal of all the glandular tissue from underneath the nipple is desirable to reduce the risk of recurrence.  In order to avoid nipple depression, the neighboring fat can be slid underneath the nipple in what is termed a "fat flap" procedure.
