What are inverted nipples?

When your nipple points inward, it is “inverted.” There are gradient levels of severity of inversion:

Grade I inverted nipples may pop out if exposed to the cold, during sexual arousal, or popped out manually
Grade II inverted nipples suffer from a more form of inversion, and they rarely pop out on their own and can be challenging to pull out manually
Grade III inverted nipples are severely inverted, and it can be very difficult to pop out if possible at all. Grade III inversion can make it impossible to breastfeed a baby.

How are inverted nipples repaired?

Inverted nipple correction is a surgical procedure to pull a nipple outward and restore a natural, healthy look. Inverted nipple correction is performed under local anesthesia and is a rapid procedure that can be completed in an hour.

The steps in the procedure are as follows:

A small 1.5-2 centimeter incision is made in the areola near the nipple
The tissues that are pulling the nipple inward are released
Internal sutures are placed to hold the nipple in its new position
The incisions are then closed.

Once the surgery is completed and the bolster is in place, you will return home to recover. Most patients return to work within one day, and full recovery usually takes about seven days. The key aspect is not to compress the repaired nipple by touch or by clothing during the healing process. You will wear loose fitting clothing and you may wear a push-up bra that doesn’t put pressure on the nipple. Most patients report minimal pain, though the procedure may interfere with nipple sensation. Dr. Khalifeh also advises patients that plan on breast feeding not to have the procedure done as the chances of being able to breast feed as it will interfere with your breast feeding ability.
