Which type of liposuction is best for me?

The first question should be, "what artistic surgeon is right for me?" Liposculpture is akin to an artist using a delicate pain brush rather than a fairy waving a magical wand, and we believe we our expertise and artistic eye is top-notch.

For maximizing results, our goal is to match our patients with the best techniques after a comprehensive examination. On a given day, a quarter of the people we see may not be ideal candidates, so we will educate them, and for the patients that are good candidates, we find that a combination of laser liposuction and tumescent liposuction often produces the best result for smaller (one to two area cases), whereas for more extensive work, we will often use J-Plasma™ or VASER™. When under the care of Dr. Khalifeh, we will seek to match you with the best possible technique for your body and goals.

The fusion of advanced technology and education: Superior results in liposuction

When considering body sculpting, we help you separate hype from reality. We believe the fusion of advanced technology with education, experience, and artistry produces a far superior result.

Tumescent  fluid , the first  basic step in all liposuction techniques.

All modern liposuction procedures start with infusing tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid is composed of saline, lidocaine for pain control, epinephrine for bleeding control, and bicarbonate to make the infusion less painful. The quantity of these substances will depend on the area being treated. If you hear of the “wet technique” or “super-wet technique.” These terms refer to the quantity of fluid injected. No matter what type of liposuction is to be used, you can expect some amount of tumescent fluid to be injected to start the process.

What are  the different liposuction related  technologies?

After the infusion of the tumescent fluid, a variety of the technologies  may be applied, including laser (Smartlipo) or ultrasound (VASER), to break up and release the fat cells from the surrounding tissues. Skin tightening and fat breaking technologies vary and include laser-assisted (such as Smartlipo) or ultrasound (such as Vaser), or plasma based energy like  J-plasma. Power-Assisted liposuction called MicroAire or a water-jet assisted system may be applied to loosen and break up the fat. There are advantages and disadvantages to each method. Our customized technologically advanced  liposuction treatment is cutting edge and can help you attain your beauty goals.

Am I a good
candidate for liposuction?

The purpose of the consultation is to assess your goals and the areas of treatment and give you the best advice to help you decide whether to proceed or not. To be a good candidate for liposuction, you should be:

  • In good general health
  • Within 30 percent of your ideal body weight
  • Your skin retains a good level of elasticity
  • You are not trying to use liposuction as a weight loss regimen, but a sculpting regimen
  • You have fatty areas on your abdomen, love handles, fatty upper arms, beneath the chin, or on the thighs or buttocks
  • You want a more sculpted figure

What is Smartlipo? What is J-Plasma? What is VASER? and of course, which is better

We realize that the field of body contouring has become very confusing for patients shopping for a minimally invasive body contouring solution.  In addition to many devices, some national companies have also sprung up such as SONOBELLO™ and AIRSCULPT™, offering their own versions of minimally invasive body contouring.

As we educate our patients, the primary determinant of how happy you will be with your results will be the skill and artistic eye of your surgeon, rather than the technology used. That said, we do perform a lot of our cases using awake laser assisted liposuction, or Smartlipo™ .  We also perform J-Plasma™ and VASER™ lipo, as well as straight tumescent lipo or power assisted lipo in some cases.

For smaller more targeted regions, we usually recommend Smartlipo™ to be performed under local anesthesia.  With smartlipo, the laser energy is emitted through a thin laser fiber . The benefits of this approach are that the fat can be extracted with far less trauma, as the laser energy melts it away from the surrounding tissue. The recovery time is faster, and Smartlipo has the added benefit of tightening the tissue around the treated area, for a smoother, firmer look overall.

For larger treatment areas, we prefer power-assisted or VASER assisted liposuction performed under general anesthesia.  This allows us to treat multiple areas at the same session.  The recovery may be longer than SMARTLIPO, but the patient's goals for multiple areas can be achieved with comfort and expediency.

FAQ

The experience, quality, and artistry of your provider are the critical points in the results of your procedure. When under the care of a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience with liposuction, you can expect superior results. Achieving board-certification requires many added years of education and practice beyond a medical degree. A “cosmetic surgeon” can be any certified medical doctor who performs cosmetic treatments and promotes these procedures.

A significant quantity of fat can be removed with liposuction. When deciding on the amount of fat to be removed, a full health evaluation is required. The general guidelines for fat removal involve a maximum limit of 11 pounds of fat to be removed, although BMI (body mass index) is being evaluated as being a more accurate way to make this decision, based on a recent study. Removing 11 pounds of fat from a patient weighing 130 and a patient weighing 190 pounds is far different, and the decision should be made by a qualified and experienced medical professional.

The incisions through which the fat extraction device is placed are tiny only about 3 to 6 mm in length. These incisions heal quickly into small and not very noticeable marks.  In addition, we will place all incisions in aeras where they are not likely to be seen.
