The Fillers:  An extremely valuable tool in non-surgical Enhancement                                         |Before/After|

The fillers are products designed to be injected into the soft tissues of a region and restore or enhance the volume of that region.  The strategy of filling an area has been around for a long time, and the earliest products were collagen derived.  Over the years, the refinements continued and a shift to hyaluronic acid derived products (Restylane®, Belotero®, Juvederm®)and a calcium hydroxyapetitie derived product (Radiesse®) occurred, which are today the most popular lines of fillers.  Lidocaine (numbing agent) was successfully intermixed with the fillers, making today’s line of fillers the least painful to use and the safest.

What are fillers?

A filler is any substance that is injected into the human body at any site with the purpose to increase the volume in that area.  A filler may be natural (such as autologous (ie: your own) fat) or artificial (such as artefill).  It can also be made of human like material (collagen, hyaluronic acid, calcium hydroxyapetite).  There are various brands of fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero, Perlane, and others.  Like most things in plastic surgery, the skill of the injector is more important than the specific brand used.

Is Botox a filler?

No, botox falls under the family of wrinkle relaxers.  The wrinkle relaxers are medications injected, who carry out their function (paralysis of unwanted muscle action), and dissipate.  The fillers will stay anywhere between 9 months to 18 months and are designed not to interact with surrounding tissues.

Example 1:  Treatment of Nasolabial Folds:

The nasolabial folds (parentheses lines that surround the mouth) are the leading area where fillers are used to reverse the signs of aging.  Below is an example of a patient that was treated with 2 tubes of fillers.  Dr. Khalifeh recommended one tube of radiesse for the deep aspect of the fold, followed by one tube of juvederm for the superficial aspect of the fold.   Radiesse is excellent for the deeper folds, and it lasts about eighteen months, which is longer than the other fillers.  Whenever appropriate, we will recommend the longest lasting filler for that area.

Example 2: Lip Enhancement with fillers:

The lips can be accentuated and enhanced with fillers.  My preferred filler for that region is a hyaluronic acid such as Juvederm, Restylane, or Belotero.  Typically, these fillers will last about 10 months.  If the lips already have a nicely defined arc, we will follow the arc and accentuate it.  For flat lips, we will work at trying to make an attractive arch by injecting different amounts in each area.

Am I a good Candidate for a filler:

A consultation with M.R. Khalifeh is the best way to make a plan for your facial rejuvenation or enhancement goals.  A consultation costs $150, but that amount can be applied towards the cost of your treatment for that day, so if you are sure you want to get a treatment, the consult ends up being complicmentary.  A consulation with our cosmetic nurse to discuss your options is always complimentary, so you can set up a time to speak to her about the products as well.  The injections will be performed by M.R. Khalifeh, MD himself. Either way, we look forward to meeting with you.
