Mini Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Washington, DC with Dr. Marwan Khalifeh

Mini Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) in Washington, DC with Dr. Marwan Khalifeh

A mini abdominoplasty surgery combines liposuction of the abdomen and flanks with resection of excessing hanging skin in the lower abdomen. It is a less extensive version of the full or standard abdominoplasty operation. During the full, or standard abdominoplasty operation, the operative dissection will go all the way to the rib cage.  The belly button will also have an incision around it, and it will be left attached to the underlying muscles. During the mini abdominoplasty, the operative dissection proceeds to the umbilicus. There are no cuts, and hence no scars around the umbilicus. The amount of skin removed with the mini abdominoplasty is about a third of the amount of tissue removed with the standard abdominoplasty. The major disadvantage of the mini abdominoplasty is that the muscle tightening does not go as superiorly as with a standard abdominoplasty.  Therefore, not all the muslce laxity can be corrected. An ideal candidate for the miniabdominoplasty surgery would be a woman with little muscle laxity but with a small pouch (such as a c-section pouch) that can be removed without needing extensive undermining. Another time that Dr. Khalifeh likes to offer a mini abdominoplasty is for the woman who absolutely wants to get rid of her c-section pouch now, but who is planning on having more children in the future.  In those scenarios, a mini abdominoplasty, or mini tummy tuck surgery, combined with liposuction surgery, offers an excellent “bridge’ option until childbirth is completed. Contrary to intuition, the scar lenght with a mini abdominoplasty operation is not very smaller than the scar lenght of a standard abdominoplasty.  Of course, there is no scar around the umbilicus, however the lower incision is about the same lenght. Dr. Khalifeh’s Notes:  ”  I perform hundreds and hundreds of tummy tucks and abdominal  liposuction procedures per year for patients coming from all over Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington DC, yet I only perform about 2-3 mini tummy tucks.  This is because most patients will better be served by either “going the full way” with a standard tummy tuck, or just doing laser liposuction of the abdomen to get skin tightening.  Rarely do I find a patient who’se best option would be to go “half way” with a mini tummy tuck.  When I make the incision for the tummy tuck, one of my main goals is to tighten the underlying muscles completely, going from the pubic bone to the xyphoid process (rib cage).  the mini tummy tuck does not allow such tightening.  That said, for a woman planning to have more children who has an unslightly pouch, or for a woman who has minimal muscle stretching, the mini abdominoplasty operation can be a very rewarding experience.”   The mini abdominoplasty operation can be performed either awake with local anesthesia, or under intravenous sedation or general aneshtesia in our Chevy Chase office, serving the Washington DC area, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.

Mini Tummy Tuck in Washington, DC

A mini tummy tuck is a type of abdominoplasty. The mini tummy tuck is a modified tummy tuck. In this procedure, a short incision is made directly at or above the pubic area, much like the incision made during a cesarean section. Dr. Khalifeh performs a mini tummy tuck by removing your excess skin after tightening your abdominal muscles at his Washington DC facility.

The Difference Between a Mini Tummy Tuck & Full Tummy Tuck

The incision for a mini tummy tuck is less noticeable than the incisions made for a full tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck does not reposition the navel. This is why it does not require the incision around the belly button that is used in a full tummy tuck in Washington DC. The goal of the mini tummy tuck is the same as the goal for the full tummy tuck, to create a flatter and tighter stomach. The recovery time for a mini tummy tuck is shorter than is necessary for a full tummy tuck procedure. However, a mini tummy tuck is still a major surgery.

A Good Candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck

Ideally, an individual with most issues beneath the belly button is the best candidate for a mini tummy tuck. Patients who have always been in good shape but have reached a level where diet and exercise can no longer help are excellent candidates for a mini tummy tuck in Washington DC. A perfect candidate for a mini tummy tuck is an individual who has localized fat beneath the belly button and want to tighten that area.

Who is Not a Good Candidate for a Mini Tummy Tuck

If a woman is planning another pregnancy, she should wait until she has completed her family to have her mini tummy tuck at our Washington DC surgical center.
