Breast Reduction Surgery in Washington, DC with Dr. Marwan Khalifeh

Breast Reduction Surgery in Washington, DC with Dr. Marwan Khalifeh

This  section is on Female breast reduction.  See here for male breast reduction.

Breast reduction, also known as a reduction mammoplasty (cpt code 19318), is a surgery designed to remove excess skin and breast tissue, creating both a smaller breast and an uplifted breast. A breast reduction typically includes a breast lift, but the reverse is not always true.

Many women seek a breast reduction for both medical (back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, inability to exercise) and cosmetic reasons. The rejuvenated shape of the breast after it has been uplifted is pleasing, and when symptoms are present and are deemed to be caused by the heaviness/hanging of the breasts, removing breast tissue helps alleviate back pain and increase mobility.

Non-Cosmetic Breast Reductions (and insurance coverage)

There are some reasons other than cosmetic concerns for seeking a breast reduction. Some healthy insurance plans may help cover some of the costs of a breast reduction for the following indications.

    • Back, neck or shoulder pain
    • Restriction of physical activity due to the size and weight of the breasts.
    • Painful bra strap marks
    • rashes, typically in the fold of the breasts.

Breast Reduction Procedure in Washington DC

A breast reduction procedure at our Washington DC office generally takes between three to four  hours.

Dr. Khalifeh makes a wise pattern incision pattern when doing a breast reduction, which result in a scar with three segments  while performing a breast reduction procedure:

1.  A circular incision round the areola, which is the dark area surrounding the nipple
2.  A vertical incision  from the areola to the crease beneath the breast
3.A horizontal incision at the breast crease.

Techniques for breast reduction vary depending on your breast size, shape, and skin laxity. The most commonly employed technique is an inferior pedicle technique that is time tested and results in very pleasing shape in a safe and reliable fashion. The incisions involved result in a circular scar around the nipple, a vertically oriented scar in the middle of the breast, and a horizontal scar in the breast fold. The procedure is done typically under general anesthesia and takes three hours to perform. Click here to see how the nipple is repositioned during surgery.

In smaller reductions and appropriate patients, Dr. Khalifeh will sometime use a vertical pattern reduction with or without a superior pedicle.  This can limit the amount of scars required and also produce outstanding results.

Recovery Process

Even though the incions are long, the recover process for a breast reduction is relatively short. Typcially , patients are back to work within 1- 2 weeks. A drain is typically not required, but that decision is done intraoperatively based on the amount of resection and surrounding lymphatic tissue. The use of the arm is slightly limited during the healing period, and no heavy lifting is allowed. A sports bra or surgical bra must be worn for two weeks. An antibiotic and pain medication are required after surgery for about a week.

Breast Reduction Washington DC

Breast reduction surgery is utilized to reduce the size of a woman’s breasts while maintaining or improving the appearance of the breasts. Dr. Marwan Khalifeh performs breast reduction procedures for Washington DC area patients regularly. Dr. Khalifeh typically performs this surgery using general anesthesia so his patient is asleep and free from pain.

During the Breast Reduction Procedure in Washington DC

Dr. Khalifeh:

  • removes the excess fat, breast tissue, and skin;
  • relocate the areolas to higher positions on the breasts and decrease the size of the areola; and
  • closes the incisions using stitches, reshaping the breasts.

Sometimes, liposuction is also performed during this surgery to improve the shape of the armpit areas and breasts.  This would not be covered by insurance as it is considered cosmetic.

Preparing for Your Breast Reduction Procedure in Washington DC

If you smoke cigarettes, you need to stop before your breast reduction surgery at our Washington DC office. Women who smoke, increase their risk of infection, have difficulty healing and more noticeable scarring. Ideally, you should avoid secondhand smoke as well.

Tell Dr. Khalifeh if:

  • You are taking any medications, including medications that are purchased over the counter, as well as any herbal supplements and vitamins.
  • You know you are currently pregnant or think you could be.

Prior to your breast reduction procedure in Washington DC:

Dr. Khalifeh will perform a routine breast exam. He may also request that you have a mammogram prior to your breast reduction surgery. Be sure you arrange for someone to drive you to and from our Washington DC facility for your breast reduction surgery. Ask a friend or family member to stay with you to help you around the house for the first night after your breast reduction surgery.

A few days before your breast reduction procedure, Dr. Khalifeh may request that you discontinue taking certain medications including Ibuprofen, Aspirin.

Following this request is vital because these medications make it difficult for your blood to clot while you heal from your breast reduction surgery. If you are currently taking any medications, herbal supplements or vitamins, ask Dr. Khalifeh which medications and supplements are ok to take on the day of your breast reduction procedure near Washington DC.

On the Day of Your Breast Reduction Surgery at our Washington DC Office

1. You will be instructed not to eat or drink prior to your breast reduction surgery.
2. Whatever medications and supplements Dr. Khalifeh told you were safe to continue taking, take with a small sip of water on the day of your breast reduction procedure.
3. Arrive to the facility on time with your driver.
4. Bring loose clothing with you on the day of your breast reduction surgery. Make sure the clothing either zips or buttons in front.

Following Your Breast Reduction Procedure in Washington DC

A breast reduction is typically an outpatient surgery, and you will likely be able to return home after the recovery room. You will be instructed to wear a surgical bra or you will have a bandage (gauze dressing) wrapped around your chest and breasts. You will likely be required to wear the surgical bra or a soft supportive bra for several weeks. Drainage tubes may be used. Dr. Khalifeh will remove these tubes several days after your breast reduction procedure in Washington DC. Take the pain medicine as directed. Never apply heat  to your breasts, however you may ice the area as instructed by Dr. Khalifeh.

After a few weeks, the bruising and swelling surrounding your incisions should be gone. You could temporarily experience a loss of sensation to your nipples and affected areas of skin on your breast. Over time, these sensations may return. If you have stitches, they will be removed a couple of weeks after your breast reduction procedure in Washington DC.

Prognosis Following Your Breast Reduction

Most women experience an increase in their self-esteem following their breast reduction surgery. They may also be able to participate in activities that were previously uncomfortable for them.

While the scars from the breast reduction procedure are visible the first year after your breast reduction surgery, they will begin to fade. However, Dr. Khalifeh makes every effort possible to place these incisions in areas that are inconspicuous. Because these incisions are placed on the bottom of the breasts and on the breasts, they may not be  visible in many bras or swim suits.
