With liposuction, the function of the compression garment is to encourage the rapid drainage of the residual blood-tinged tumescent anesthetic solution from beneath the skin, and to promote the rapid healing of the skin and soft tissues back onto the body. Compression also prevents prolonged swelling and forces the absorption of the solution that was used during the procedure. They also help prevent any bleeding, although with the tumescent solution being infiltrated prior to the procedure, bleeding is minimal.
I always tell my patients to envision a block of solid cheese as the part of their body they want contoured. After liposuction, the solid block of fat becomes full of tunnels, akin to swiss cheese. The volume is still there, but it is now filled with fluid (tumescent) after the fat is removed via many tunnels. The compression garment assures that these tunnels, which are filled with liquid/swelling, gradually collapsing these tunnels to reform a solid block, although much thinner than before.
To ensure compliance, I use the least amount of compression needed. For instance, if we are doing flanks and abdomen, I use an abdominal binder, which patients find very easy to adjust on and off. If we are doing thighs, a garment is needed. Pictured below are a few examples.

examples of abdominal binders for abdomen, and compression garment for thigh lipo.

For most of my liposuction cases, I use laser liposuctino with the open drainage technique (skin slits are not closed with stitches). I recommend wearing the garments for two whole weeks. One exception is the neck area, where I recomend patients to wear the garment only for 24 hours beyond the time when all drainage has stopped.
The garment is provided to patient at the time of surgery. It is part of your all inclusive cost.
